Blaring bluegrass in Boswell

Madrigal Singers, Panhandle Polecats perform

By Gradin, Jonathan

The NIC Choral Extravaganza concert on Sunday, April 26 was a resounding success, partly due to the special guests: The Panhandle Polecats, a local bluegrass band. The NIC Concert Choir, conducted by Max Mendez with Toni Helms accompanying on piano, began the concert with a lovely song by Johannes Brahms, "O Schone Nacht" (O Lovely Night), which featured many rich, lush harmonies.

Going through the motions

How not to celebrate Mother's Day

By Loren Kelly

Let me present the most elaborate, pretentious metaphor of my (nonexistent) career: Fat Wallet sits down to eat with a beautiful woman. He has the routine down. An expensive bottle of petit syrah is purchased. The waiter raises cork, tips bottle, and pours a taster.

'Star Trek' hits theater

Not sure about visiting the box office? Make it so

By Madelynn Campbell

Let me say right off the bat that I am not a "Trekkie." I have little to no knowledge of the classic series so there are elements of the story that I can claim ignorance to. But in an attempt to get a well-rounded experience of the film, I invited my dad along to see it with me.

Willing, wanting more

Theater production features series of enticing vignettes

By Steven Hamari

John Cariani's "Almost Maine" is a collection of vignettes filled with fantasy, romance, drama and quirky, small-town characters. The action unfolds in the fictional town of Almost, Maine, on a frosty winter eve. I'm not big on romance, but I do enjoy watching people make-out in public without having to wear a trench coat and pretend to read the newspaper.

Christian band expands upon parameters

mewithoutYou adds instruments in daring, progressive new album

By Kelsey Kuhnhausen

It's different! It's strange! It's joyful! And it's actually not bad. Admittedly upon first listen of mewithoutYou's "It's all crazy! It's all false! It's all a dream! It's alright!" my response was "It's terrible!" mewithoutYou's fourth studio album, which comes out May 19, takes a completely different approach than previous releases and definitely requires more patience, time and attention to appreciate.
