Jack Vanderlinden narrowly escaped defeat April 22 by two votes to claim the ASNIC presidency outright for the upcoming academic year, beating Melissa Owens 212-210. He was named to the position last semester after two previous presidents resigned.

A total of 423 votes were cast in the ASNIC spring elections, bringing new and existing leadership opportunities to campus once more. A returning president and vice president, two returning senators and two newly elected senators will be running the student government next year.

"I expected it to be close," said Vanderlinden. "Melissa and I each had a lot of support from the student body. I'm glad the outcome was positive for me and that I won. I look forward to maintaining my position as ASNIC president."

Next year's ASNIC members include: Vanderlinden, 20, general studies, president; Jenna Betts, 20, fine arts, vice president, and senators Torri Meagher, 20, general studies; Syafiq Fuller, 20, general studies; Alex Doler, 19, modern languages and Brian De Austin, 19, resort recreation management. According to Betts, the representatives are planning to meet throughout the summer to discuss plans for the coming year.

"Congratulations to all of the candidates that participated in the spring election," Betts said. "We had a great turnout and have some really good people representing the students' voice this year. We discussed our plans for summer, how we are planning to stay in touch with each other and how to keep things fresh in our minds. No definite ideas or plans have been put into place for fall."

Fuller, 20, general studies major and current senator, said he feels that getting together this summer is a good thing. Doler said he is excited about winning a senatorial position.

"It's a huge accomplishment," Doler said. "I hope to increase communication between students and ASNIC and help to promote culture.

"We need to stay on top of this," Fuller said. "We need to keep thinking about how we can improve our communication with the student body and how we can push forward to bring new ideas and concepts to the table."
