Samhain, or summer's end, a Celtic festival practiced in Ireland and Scotland, celebrated the end of the lighter half of the year and the beginning of the darker half. The ancient Celts thought the border between their world and the world of the dead thinned out on Samhain. To prevent spirits from passing through, people honored their family's ancestors and wore masks and costumes.

Pope Gregory III, in an attempt to stop pagan festivities, moved All Saints Day from May 13 to November 1. Thus, Oct. 31 became the eve of All Saints Day, or All Hallows Eve. This ultimately became Halloween.

Members of the NIC community celebrated Halloween all month. The bookstore sold Halloween merchandise and decorated accordingly. The Society of Ink and Pen had an open mic fright night complete with the silent film, "Dracula."

Halloween gives people the opportunity to let their hair down and for one day to become someone, or something else. For one day, the campus was filled with vampires, ghosts, pirates, cats, movie stars and hit men. Somebody was even seen driving around with a dead body in the trunk of their car.
